Care guide
How to wash a body pillow: the cover and fill have different rules.
The fastest way to damage a body pillow is to assume a washable cover makes the entire product machine-washable.

| Care level | What it means in this library | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Whole-pillow care published | The maker publishes a process for the insert as well as the cover | Machine capacity, cycle, detergent, and complete drying |
| Removable-cover care | The cover has wash instructions; the insert has separate care | Whether the liner or fill is spot-clean only |
| Spot care | The insert or shell should not be machine-washed | Allowed cleaner, moisture limits, and drying |
A safe pre-wash checklist
- Find the sewn label and current manufacturer page.
- Separate cover, liner, and fill instructions.
- Confirm the washer has enough capacity for the item to move freely.
- Use only the stated water temperature, cycle, and detergent.
- Follow the complete drying instructions before returning the pillow to the bed.
Examples from the research library
Coop currently publishes machine-wash instructions for both its cover and filled pillow, with a commercial washer recommended for the insert. Our September 2 research recorded a washable Cool ComfortFit cover and spot-clean pillow; Sleep Number’s current instructions could not be reconfirmed on October 2. Buffy publishes a washable Wiggle cover and spot-care for the insert.
Those examples explain why each research profile stores cover and insert care separately. For replacement sizing, use the 20x54 cover guide.
Frequently asked questions
Can I put a body pillow in a washing machine?+
Only if the current manufacturer instructions for that exact insert allow it and the machine is large enough. Many foam and specialty inserts are spot-clean only.
How often should I wash the cover?+
Follow the product label and your household needs. BodyPillow.net does not set one schedule for every fabric, sleeper, or product.
Why does drying matter so much?+
Large inserts can retain moisture. Incomplete drying can damage fill or create odor. Follow the manufacturer’s stated drying method and make sure the product is fully dry.
Can I use a commercial washer?+
Some manufacturers recommend one because a filled body pillow may be too large for a household machine. That recommendation is product-specific.
What if the care label conflicts with an online article?+
Use the sewn label and the current manufacturer instructions for the exact product. General articles and retailer summaries can become outdated.
