Shared-bed guide

Body pillows for shared beds: measure the mattress, not just the pillow.

A pillow can fit on paper and still feel enormous after two sleepers, blankets, and standard head pillows are added.

See the difference on a queen and king

These original diagrams use common US queen (60 × 80 inches) and king (76 × 80 inches) dimensions. Green shows either Coop’s published 20 × 54-inch rectangle or the 28 × 56-inch outer bounds listed by Eli & Elm. Both were checked October 2, 2026.

40 inches of mattress width remain alongside the outline—20 inches per person if split evenly. This is arithmetic, not a comfort allowance.

32 inches of mattress width remain alongside the outline—16 inches per person if split evenly. This is arithmetic, not a comfort allowance.

56 inches of mattress width remain alongside the outline—28 inches per person if split evenly. This is arithmetic, not a comfort allowance.

48 inches of mattress width remain alongside the outline—24 inches per person if split evenly. This is arithmetic, not a comfort allowance.

How to read this: each pillow outline sits lengthwise at the mattress edge so the width subtraction is easy to compare. Real pillows can be angled, compressed or partly underneath a sleeper. The curved model’s bounding rectangle includes empty space inside the curve; it is not a claim that the whole rectangle is filled. Head pillows and bedding are not drawn.

The king is 16 inches wider than the queen in this example. Changing from a 20-inch rectangle to a 28-inch outline takes 8 more inches of width. Neither calculation tells you whether two particular people will be comfortable.

Try the footprint before ordering

  1. Measure your actual mattress; do not rely only on its size name.
  2. Mark the proposed outer dimensions with a folded sheet or towels.
  3. Add your usual head pillows and bedding, then check space for both sleepers to turn and get out of bed.
  4. For a wrap, confirm the inner opening as well as overall width. For a flexible pillow, arrange the mock-up in the shape you intend to use.
  5. Check the seller’s return conditions before treating the mock-up as a reason to buy.

A towel outline tests geometry only. It cannot reproduce loft, firmness, weight or sleeping comfort. If the seller does not publish complete dimensions, ask for them before relying on a fit calculation.

Three overlooked measurements

  • Usable width: the mattress width remaining after head pillows, blankets, and each sleeper’s preferred space.
  • Total length: a flexible 82-inch pillow can spread differently from a 54-inch rectangle.
  • Weight: a large fill volume can make nighttime repositioning and daytime storage more difficult.

How this changes recommendations

The Fit Lab gives compact profiles more mattress-space points when the shopper selects a shared queen or a compact setup. That can move a straight pillow above a wrap even when both match the same feel or temperature preference.

Frequently asked questions

Can two people share a queen bed with a body pillow?+

Often, but product footprint matters. A straight 20x54 pillow uses less width than many full wraps. Measure the actual pillow and the usable mattress area.

Which shape is easiest to share?+

Straight and compact curved profiles are usually easiest to reposition. U-shaped and extra-long flexible pillows tend to require more room.

Does pillow weight matter on a shared bed?+

Yes. A heavier pillow may stay in place but can also be harder to move during the night or store during the day.

How does the Fit Lab score a shared queen?+

Profiles labeled easy to share receive the full mattress-space score. Roomier profiles receive a lower score. The rule is published and independent of commission.
